Standing on the banks of the Douro River in Porto, I captured this image blending Portugals enduring fishing traditions with one of its most iconic feats of engineering. The towering ironwork behind the fisherman belongs to the Dom Luís I Bridge, famously designed by Théophile Seyrig, a partner of Gustave Eiffel. This double-deck metal arch bridge, completed in 1886, stretches majestically across the river with an upper span of 395 meters and a central arch rising about 45 meters above the water. The intricate lattice of steel dwarfs the solitary fisherman in the foreground, highlighting the monumental scale of the bridge compared to human activity and casting dramatic shadows on the old masonry piers. This photo, for me, is a meeting point between Portos historic industrial ambition and its vibrant river life.
